From Birthday Cards to Reid on his 20th Birthday (2004)
Reid had just learned that his cancer had returned. He had no symptoms and only the hope that doctors could once again drive the cancer into remission. Neither he nor we knew what a difficult journey lay ahead.
"Happy Birthday Reid,
Every year people are faced with new challenges that they must overcome. The manner in which they face the challenge develops that person's character and defines who they really are. It's hard to find reason for why your challenges have to be so much more difficult than most anyone else's. When attempting to figure this out, Lance Armstrong came to my mind. He has faced similar challenges as you and has fought through them and has become symbol of strength in the eyes of the world. I have always admired you and have often bragged to my friends of you and your many accomplishments with great pride. You are given challenge after challenge because you do have the strength, and therefore will forever be a symbol of courage and hope for your friends, family, and me. ps. As my symbol of strength, I am expecting you to help me fix the sound system in my car and help me make some CD's for it!!. Love, Weston"
Having a son like you makes being a parent especially rewarding, for you are at a wonderful time in your life -- a time of dreams and new beginnings -- and the promise of your future unfolding is an exciting thing to watch...And as you celebrate your birthday and continue to learn and try new things, remember that you always have the love and support of your family behind you, for you are the king of son any parent would be proud to have.
"Reid,
We bought this card before we knew your dreams would need to be postponed again. But these are still wonderful times, and being your parents has never been more rewarding.
You were remarkable in your being able to make the most of the last detour in your plans. In that time, you learned and wrote and studied; you grew and matured; you played and strengthened your relationships; you inspired; you made people happy and made them laugh; you shared yourself with us; and you fell more deeply in love.
Going forward, we know you will continue to do all these things and more, no matter how many times your college plans change. We'll look forward to next year, too, when we'll toast your 21st birthday, maybe with a drink at Alison's down the Port. You make us so proud and happy.
Love, Mom and Dad"
